Sermons

I put up a couple of widgets. One for books I’ve read and loved. I’ll be adding more to that one. Another to some good sermon sites.

One sermon site I couldn’t get onto the widget (the link wouldn’t work for some reason) was the place at Sermon Audio where a friend (in the cyber sense of the word) keeps his sermons. Bob Vincent is Reformed and Charismatic, which I’ve always kind of thought was a contradiction in terms. But as long as I’ve known this guy (eleven years, I think) he’s always impressed me with his thoroughly scriptural view of things. He’s quite smart and very interested in many things, politics, social issues, church life, etc. and he looks at all of these things through scriptural glasses. What he writes always educates me at some point. So if you want to check out some of his sermons, you can find them here. 276 of them to choose from!

And then in the widget I linked to Sproul’s sermons, and to Alistair Begg’s. I also linked to my church website, Doctor Rick Holmes is the minister there and both he and our assistant pastor, Wesley Horne, feed us wonderfully each week–encouraging us to enjoy God’s love, live in it, and pass it on. (But I think what I love most about my church is that the pastor prays. And I believe several of the elders and a lot of the people in the pew do, too. That may seem silly to mention but I’m afraid that in some churches, even in Reformed churches, people don’t pray.) Finally I linked to sermons delivered by Dr. Martin Emmrich, who, in my opinion, is the best preacher around. (OK I’ve not heard that many preachers so I may be wrong) I just love this man’s style of preaching for some reason. He seems to serve up Christ and grace every week–at least he did when I used to sit under his sermons in Alaska.

But I realize that the tool of the Internet sometimes works as a curse. We have so much to choose from that we have a hard time deciding where to invest our time. I know a lot of you won’t go over and click on any of these sites because who has time to listen to sermons and where do we start if we do have time? So I’ll post about sermons I’ve found encouraging. And maybe one day you’ll have time to click over and give a listen.

I try to listen to a sermon every day. I just can’t see letting all this good preaching pass me by.

Today I listened to a short clip of a sermon–I guess it was a sermon, though it had more of an entertainment feel to it–by Mark Driscoll who founded Mars Hill Church in Seattle. I’d never heard him before, or read anything by him, but the clip was good, I thought–basic but presented well. Funny and thoughtful. I’m going to dig around a bit on him and see what else he has to say.
