Creation, Old and New
Yowsers!
Another one of Martin Emmrich’s sermons this morning. There’s no way to sum it up in a short blurb–he packs so much in.
This one looks at the first creation and relates it to new creation. He compares Adam and Christ, Eve and the church, Adam and Eve’s commission to the church’s commission. As usual, Martin builds a careful case for his argument (he could have been a great lawyer, I’m sure, thank God he was called to the pulpit instead).
One thing I love about his way of preaching is that he approaches the Bible as a big narrative and he takes the smaller stories and places them in context of the larger story. Another thing is that he looks at the individual words. He tells us where the author (or Author) has repeated words and phrases and calls us to consider what the author meant by emphasizing certain words or by using certain phrases in certain contexts. These finer points are sometimes lost to us in our translations. Particularly in versions of the Bible which aren’t word for word translations (like the NIV).
Anyway, go and check out the sermon about man in the Garden. You won’t be sorry.
